Translation: Mr. Jin Yuelin (Wang Zengqi)
(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)
There were many interesting professors at National Southwest Associated University.
Mr. Jin Yuelin was one of them.
Mr. Jin was a good friend of my teacher Mr. Shen Congwen.
Mr. Shen called him “Old Jin” in his face and behind his back.
Likely all his close friends called him by that name as well.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Shen told me some of the things about Mr. Jin.
In my article “Mr. Shen Congwen in National Southwest Associated University”, I mentioned Mr. Jin.
I did not include some of the things about him in that article and I feel I should write about them now.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin looked a bit odd.
All year round he wore a felt hat and would not take it off even when he was in a classroom.
At the beginning of every school term when he took on a class of new students, he always started the dialogue with: “There’s something wrong with my eyes and I could not take my hat off.
I mean no disrespect to you.
Please forgive me.”
I had no clue what was wrong with his eyes, and all I knew was they were very sensitive to sunlight.
———————————————————————————————-
As such, the front brim of his felt hat was positioned lower than normal and he always tilted his head a bit upward.
Later he got a pair of spectacles with one clear lens and one dark lens, and that made him look even weirder.
Afterwards, he fixed his eyes when he was lecturing in USA.
———————————————————————————————-
Once he got better, he changed his eyeglasses but his posture of slight upward-tilting of his head did not change at all.
He had a fairly tall stature and always wore a smoky-yellow suede jacket.
When the weather got cold, he would wrap a long camel-colored cashmere scarf around inside.
What the professors of SW Associated wore came in all colors and styles.
Mr. Wen Yiduo, for a period of time, wore an out-of-style gray old lined-robe.
It was a gift from a relative.
The collar was high and the sleeve-cuffs were very narrow.
One time SW Associated held an alumni gathering in the house of Long Shengwu—the eldest son of Long Yun and the godson of Chiang Kai Shek.
Long Yun’s daughter-in-law who married his oldest son was a Tsinghua alumna.
In the meeting Mr. Wen denounced loudly: “Chiang Kai Shek is a jerk and dimwit.”
What he wore on that day was this high-collared and narrow-cuffed lined robe.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Zhu Ziqing for a while put on a blue felt poncho commonly worn by horse-herders in Yunnan.
Other than gym class teachers, it seemed Mr. Jin was the only professor who wore a jacket.
His eyesight was not too good even after treatment in USA.
He walked with a limping gait.
Just like that he wore a yellow jacket, tilted his head slightly upward, and walked with a limping gait on a path of the new school building of SW Associated.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin taught the subject of logic.
Logic was a compulsory course for first-year students in the set program of Arts Faculty in SW Associated.
The class was held in a large lecture hall filled with students.
In high school, the learning of logic was unheard of.
First-year university students were very interested in this course.
Sometimes in class Mr. Jin needed to ask questions.
Since there were so many students, he was unable to call them by names.
Also there were no roll book in SW Associated.
At times he would announce at the start of the class:
———————————————————————————————-
“Today female students in red woollen sweaters will answer questions.”
Then all the female students in red woollen sweaters would get a bit nervous and excited.
At that time, a red woollen sweater over Indanthrene blue cheongsam dress was all the rage for SW Associated female students.
Blue or yellow sweaters were rarely worn.
Answering questions fluently and clearly would be a good way to grab the limelight.
Mr. Jin was always very attentive in listening to an answer and when it is finished, he would say: “Yes, please be seated.”
———————————————————————————————-
Students could also raise questions and ask Mr. Jin to answer.
Those questions had different degrees of difficulties, and Mr. Jin always provided answers with plenty of patience.
An overseas Chinese student by the name of Lin Guoda, who spoke Mandarin with a Cantonese accent, loved to ask questions.
Most of his questions were kind of weird.
Likely he felt the discipline of logic was fairly “philosophical” and therefore deserved some peculiar questions.
Once he stood up and raised an offbeat question.
林国达is perpenticular to the blackboard(林国达君垂直于黑板),这什么意思?”
Mr. Jin thought for a moment and said: “Fellow Student Lin Guoda, let me ask you a question. What does ‘Mr. Lin Guoda is perpendicular to the blackboard’ mean?”
———————————————————————————————-
Lin Guoda was stunned.
Of course practically Lin Guoda could not be positioned in perpendicular to the blackboard, but then logically there was nothing wrong with this expression.
———————————————————————————————-
Lin Guoda drowned during swimming.
Mr. Jin said in class: “Lin Guoda passed away.
It is very unfortunate.”
Throughout this class, Mr. Jin did not crack a smile.
———————————————————————————————-
A student, likely Chen Yunzhen, i.e., Xiao Shan, once asked Mr. Jin:
———————————————————————————————-
“Why are you engaged in logic?”
The first half of logic discussed syllogism: major premise, minor promise, conclusion, distributed, undistributed, induction, deduction, etc., and comparably those were the interesting parts of the course.
———————————————————————————————-
The second half was all symbols which were practically advanced mathematics.
She meant to insinuate this knowledge was very monotonous.
Mr. Jin’s answer was: “I think it’s a lot of fun.”
———————————————————————————————-
Other than teaching the compulsory course of logic to Arts Faculty freshman-year students, Mr. Jin also started a program “logic symbols” which was an elective course.
As far as I was concerned, this field of knowledge was all Greek to me, and very few students took this course.
There were only a few people in the classroom.
The most outstanding one among all the students was Wang Hao.
In talking on and on, sometimes Mr. Jin might pause and asked: “Wang Hao, what do you think?”
Then this session would feature a dialogue between this couple of teacher and student.
Wang Hao is in USA at present.
A few years ago in USA, he wrote a fair length article on Mr. Jin and likely it was about his teaching.
I never read it.
———————————————————————————————-
Wang Hao and I knew each other very well.
He had a good friend called Wang Jinghe who taught in the same high school as I did in Huangtupo of Kunming.
Wang Ho often came to have some fun at my place.
When he was there, he always played basketball after lunch.
He called playing ball after lunch “training the appendix”.
His look was quite bumpkin-like with a huge bald head.
———————————————————————————————-
Very few students in SW Associated shaved their heads and spoke with Shandong accent.
Now Wang Hao is a westerner—a Chinese American, and an international renowned scholar.
I can’t imagine what he looks like now.
Two years ago he came back to China to give lecture, and he requested a classmate to ask me to draw him a picture.
———————————————————————————————-
I drew several green-cracking Russula mushrooms, a few King Bolete mushrooms, a stem of green onion, two garlics, and a big piece of Xuanwei ham—bearing in mind that ham seldom makes it to drawings.
I also wrote several sentences in the drawing, one of which was “in consolation for Wang Hao’s love for his homeland in a foreign country”.
Wang Hao’s knowledge turned out to have been taken after Mr. Jin as his mentor.
It would worth a person’s while if he produces one good student in his lifetime.
Of course Mr. Jin had more than one good student.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin was into the studies of philosophy, but he had read many novels including Marcel Proust and Sherlock Holmes.
Allegedly he loved to read “Legend of Grassroots Heroes” by Bu Xiaosheng of Pingjiang.
Several SW Associated students, including Chen Yunzhen, Wang Shucang, Liu Beisi, and Shi Zaixuan (Xiao Di) lived in Jin Ji Xiang.
There was a small living room upstairs.
Sometimes Mr. Shen dragged a close acquaintance over there to give a lecture to a small group of literature lovers and student writers.
Mr. Jin was hauled over there once and the topic of his speech, “Novel and Philosophy”, was chosen by Mr. Shen.
Everybody thought Mr. Jin would bring out a bunch of arguments.
To everyone’s surprise after talking for half a day, he concluded there was no connection between novel and philosophy.
Someone asked, “What do you say on Dream of Red Chamber?”
Mr. Jin said: “The philosophies in Dream of Red Chamber are not philosophies.”
When he was talking on, suddenly he stopped and said: “Sorry! I have a little creature here.”
He reached into the back of his neck with his right hand and pulled out a flea.
Then he held it between his fingers and looked at it with pride.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin was a bachelor (Note: Many SW Associated professors were single.
Mr. Yang Zhensheng once wrote a tongue-in-cheek article “Free the Wifeless” that was passed around the professors.)
Without any children, he was able to enjoy life alone.
He kept a very big gamecock (Note: Yunnan produced gamecocks).
This gamecock could stretch its neck and dined with Mr. Jin at the same table.
He went all over the places to collect big pears and big pomegranates.
Then he took those fruits along in challenging other professors’ kids for cockfights.
If he lost, he would give the pears or pomegranates to his little friends and then shopped for some more.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin had many friends.
Other than Philosopher Professors, as far as I knew, the people he regularly socialized with included Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin husband-and-wife couple, Shen Congwen, Zhang Xiruo, etc.
However, friendship between gentlemen usually would be shallow.
A gathering usually would only involve, after sitting down, a little chitchat over a cup of tea.
Mr. Jin thought highly of Lin Huiyin’s way of carrying a conversation and her talent.
Most of the young people nowadays would not know Lin Huiyin.
She studied architecture but was very interested in literature.
Also she was an expert in connoisseurship.
The poems and novels that she wrote, such as “Beyond the Window” and “Within Ninety-Nine Degrees”, were refreshing in style and unparalleled in attainment.
After she died, one year Mr. Jin hosted a dinner at Beijing Restaurant.
When his old friends received the invitation, they were puzzled as to why Old Jin was treating?
After they arrived, Mr. Jin announced: “Today is Huiyin’s birthday.”
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin lived a secluded life and seldom came out in his sunset years.
Chairman Mao once said to him: “You have to get in touch with society.”
Mr. Jin was already eighty and some odd years old and how could he get in touch with society?
Anyway, he made arrangement with a flatbed-tricycle cyclist to pedal him for a long tour around the area of Wangfujing every day.
———————————————————————————————-
I could imagine it would be a very interesting scene with Mr. Jin looking around while sitting on a flatbed tricycle.
Wangfujing would be bustling with pedestrians but no one would notice that this old man looking around was a great philosopher who was rich in knowledge, childlike in demeanor, and passionate about life.
———————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jin was profoundly dedicated in the pursuit of his studies but he did not have a lot of publications.
Other than “Logic” among the book collection in university, there was another one “Discussion on Arguments” as far as I know.
I am not clear if there were others, and we should ask Wang Hao on that.
———————————————————————————————-
What I know about Mr. Jin is very little and I hope people who are familiar with Mr. Jin could do a better job in writing about him.
———————————————————————————————-
Someone should spend time in writing about many of the professors in SW Associated.

附注:
(1) “blue or yellow sweater” vs. “blue and yellow sweater”
The Chinese text refers to (a) blue sweaters + (b) yellow sweaters.
If you say “blue and yellow sweaters”, it could mean sweaters with blue and yellow colors in the same sweaters.
Therefore “blue or yellow sweaters” would clarify the confusion and refers to what the Chinese version intends to say.
