When Daniel was ten years old, unfortunately he contracted AIDS through blood transfusion.
伙伴们全都躲着他，
All his friends were avoiding him.
只有大他四岁的艾迪依旧像从前一样跟他玩耍。
Only Eddie, who was four years his senior, continued to play with him as he did before.
离德诺家的后院不远，有一条通往大海的小河，
Not too far away from the backyard of Daniel’s home was a small river that flowed all the way to the ocean.
河边开满了五颜六色的花朵，
Along the riverbank were blossoming flowers of various colors.
艾迪告诉德诺，把这些花草熬成汤，说不定能治他的病。
Eddie told Daniel that perhaps potions brewed with those flowers could cure his illness.

By chance, Eddie read in a magazine that Dr. Phil in New Orleans had found a plant that could cure AIDS.

So one night under bright moon and sparse stars, he brought along Daniel and quietly started on a journey to New Orleans.

Eddie told Daniel that when they got to New Orleans and found Dr. Phil, he could live a happy life like other people.

After traveling for some distance, the boat started to take in water and they were forced to hitchhike.
为了省钱，他们晚上就睡在随身带的帐篷里。
To save money, they slept at night in a portable tent that they brought with them.
德诺的咳嗽又厉害起来，从家里带的药也快吃完了。
Daniel’s cough was getting worse and the medicine which they took from home was almost used up.

That night Daniel was so cold that he was shuddering.

He told Eddie with his feeble voice that he dreamed about the universe twenty billion years ago with very dim and darkish lights from stars.

There he was, all alone by himself, and could not find his way home.

Eddie stuffed his running shoe in Daniel’s hand and said: “When you go to sleep from now on, hug my shoe and think about Eddie’s stinky shoe is now in your hand.

Daniel was getting weaker and Eddie had no choice but to give up on the plan.
带着德诺又回到家乡。
He brought Daniel home.
不久，德诺就住进了医院。
Soon Daniel moved into the hospital.
艾迪照旧常常去病房看他。
Eddie visited him frequently in the ward as usual.
两个好朋友在一起时病房便充满了快乐。
The hospital room was filled with joy when the two good friends were together.
他们有时还会合伙玩装死游戏吓医院的护士，
Sometimes they would gang up to play a game in pretending death to pull a fast one on hospital nurses.
看见护士们上当的样子，两个人都会忍不住地大笑。
When they saw the nurses fell for it, both of them would laugh heartily.
艾迪给那家杂志写了信，希望他们能帮忙找到费医生，结果却杳无音信。
Eddie wrote a letter to that magazine and hoped they could find Dr. Phil for them but there was no response.

One afternoon in autumn, Daniel’s mother went out to shop and Eddie was keeping Daniel in company inside the hospital room.
夕阳照着德诺瘦弱苍白的脸，
The setting sun was shining on Daniel’s emaciated and pale face.
艾迪问他想不想再玩装死的游戏，德诺点点头。
Eddie asked if he wanted to play the pretend-to-be-dead game and Daniel nodded.
然而这回，德诺却没有在医生为他摸脉时忽然睁眼笑起来，
But this time before the doctor had a chance to check the pulses, Daniel suddenly opened his eyes and smiled.
他真的死了。
He really died.

That day Eddie walked home with Daniel’s mother.
俩人一路无语，直到分手的时候，
They did not say a word on the road until they were about to part way.
艾迪才抽泣着说：“我很难过，没能为德诺找到治病的药。”
Then Eddie sobbed and said: “I feel really bad that I have not found medication that could cure Eddie’s illness.”
