蟄龍三冬臥,

老鶴萬里心。

昔時賢俊人,

a. For a man with virtues and talents from the past,

用舍在所尋。

a. Whether it is utilized or not depends on purpose in seeking it.

大哉霜雪幹,

a. In big way it can be a stately pillar weathering frost and snow.

b. Great indeed, those trunks that know frost and snow,

歲久為枯林。

a. But over a long time, it could turn into deadwood.

昔者龐德公,

a. Some time ago, there was Pang Degong,

b. Long ago Pang Degong

未曾入州府。

a. who did not take office with provincial administration.

b. never once went to the prefectural seat.

襄陽耆舊間,

a. Among respected seniors in Xiangyang,

b. Among the gaffers of old Xiangyang

處士節獨苦。

a. only this loftily-principled lone-wolf lived a rough life.

b. this recluse’s standards were uniquely severe.

豈無濟時策,

a. Could it be possible he didn’t have ideas on how to help the world?

b. Of course he had plans to help the times,

終竟畏羅罟。

a. At long last he backed away from getting stuck in government role.

b. but in the end he dreaded the nets and snares.

林茂鳥有歸,

a. Birds come to dense woods,

b. Where the woods are most leafy, the birds return,

水深魚知聚。

a. and fish gather in deep water.

b. where waters are deep, fish congregate.

舉家隱鹿門,

a. His entire family retreated to hermitage.

b. The whole family hid out at Deergate—

劉表焉得取。

a. How could Liu Biao recruit him?

b. how could Liu Biao get his hands on him?

陶潛避俗翁,

a. Tao Qian, a senior who shunned the mundane world,

b. Tao Qian, old fellow who avoided the common,

未必能達道。

a. might not necessarily achieve what he set out to do.

b. wasn’t necessarily able to achieve his Way.

觀其著詩集,

a. In reading his poetry collection,

b. When I look at the collection of poems he wrote,

頗亦恨枯槁。

a. seemingly he somewhat disliked his monotonous existence.

b. he really hated his barren life.

達生豈是足,

a. Would understanding the meaning of life be sufficient?

b. How can sufficiency make a fulfilled life?—

默識蓋不早。

a. It would never be too early to keep that in mind without voicing it.

有子賢與愚,

a. Some of his sons were sharp, and others were slow (1).

b. Having sons, whether worthy or fools,

何其掛懷抱。

賀公雅吳語,

在位常清狂。

上疏乞骸骨,

a. He petitioned for retirement so his bones could be buried back home,

黃冠歸故鄉。

a. and returned to village as an ordinary Taoist follower.

爽氣不可致,

a. His overpowering spirit no longer showed.

b. His dashing temper cannot be brought back,

斯人今則亡。

a. By now, that individual has passed away.

b. such a man now has perished.

山陰一茅宇,

a. Leaving behind is a thatched hut in County Shanyin.

b. In Shanyin a single thatched cottage,

江海日淒涼。

a. Rivers and seas seemed increasingly dreary without him.

b. the river and lakes grow daily more bleak and cool.

吾憐孟浩然,

a. I feel sorry for Meng Haoran.

b. I sadly cherish Meng Haoran,

裋褐即長夜。

a. He stayed a commoner for many gloomy days.

b. wearing coarse homespun he went to the long night.

賦詩何必多,

a. It was not necessary for him to compose many poems to stand out.

b. Why need one’s poems be many?–

往往淩鮑謝。

a. Often his works outshine those of poets Bao and Xie.

b. everywhere he surpasses Bao and Xie.

清江空舊魚,

a. Regular fish live idly in limpid river.

b. On the clear river are only those fish of before,

春雨餘甘蔗。

a. Spring showers leave behind sugarcanes.

b. in spring rain there is abundant sugarcane.

每望東南雲,

a. Every time in looking at clouds towards southeast where he died,

b. Whenever I gaze on clouds to the southeast,

令人幾悲吒。

a. it makes me indignantly sad.

b. it makes me heave several sad sighs.

Note 1: “sharp” and “slow”

Here “sharp” means quick-witted, and “slow” means unintelligent (“Slow” could be insulting, but it is used here for being good contrast with “sharp”).
